Student Visas

Each year thousands of students from all over the world come to the United Kingdom to study. The legal paperwork required before one can lawfully study in the United Kingdom can appear daunting to many overseas students. At Equity Legal Consultants we advise and assist overseas students in making a successful application.

In order to qualify to travel to the UK as a student you must show:

(1) That you have been accepted on a course of study at:

  • a publicly funded institution of further or higher education (e.g. a university)
  • a private-education institution
  • an independent fee paying school

(2) That you are going to follow:

  • a recognised full-time degree course
  • a weekday full-time course involving at least 15 hours organised daytime study per week
  • a full-time course of study at an independent fee paying school

(3) That you:

  • will be able to pay for your course and support an accommodate yourself and any dependants without working or help from public funds
  • plan to leave the UK when you complete your studies

Overseas students who have been admitted to a course that lasts more than 6 months, may work providing they do not work for more than 20 hours per week during term time (unless it is a work placement that is part of ones studies, has the agreement of the education institution and leads to a degree or qualification awarded by a nationally recognised examining body). One may work any number of hours during vacations.

Overseas students can bring their spouse and children with them to the UK (children must be under the age of 18 when they first enter the UK). Whether your partner will be able to work will depend on the amount of time you are spending in the United Kingdom to study. Partners of overseas students on courses lasting more than 12 months are usually given a passport stamp that allows them to work.
